Basadi Betta in Tumkur
Mandaragiri is a picturesque small hillock on the dry stony waste land of Tumkur District. When you drive from Bangalore towards Tumkur in the National Highway 4 (NH4) after approximately
65 km from Bangalore, to your right you will observe, a small round hillock having a white line towards the peak. There you can see an entrance arch in the main road stating the name 'Mandaragiri'
and going by this way you can reach to a small village, Panditanahalli. Little distance from this place leads you to the bottom of the hill.
Chandranatha Parvatha and much more generally referred as Basadi Betta, is one of the important pilgrim centres for Jains in Karnataka. You can park you vehicles
at the bottom of Basadi Betta, and you can see a Mutt nearby. Ensure that to get the keys of the temple from the priest in case he is not coming with you towards top.
The white line you observed before is the flight of steps. The hill is smooth and you never feel so tiring. On the way up to the hill you can visit a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. The Brahma
temple housing a neat statue of the God whose mount is smeared with sindhoor. Make sure that you visit this temple.
Once you reach top of the hill after climbing 435 steps, you are welcomed by the main door of the temple. After entering the main door now you are in a huge courtyard in the midst of four
temples, two temples are dedicated to Bhagawan Chandranatha and one each one for Parshwanatha as well as Suparshwanatha. The idols are simple but wonderful. In the far corner, you can observe two
large footprints and it is believed that these footprints are of the Thirthankara.
You will also notice a tall statue of Chandranatha Thirthankara which is being carved at this place. A tall white replica of the statue stands alongside. It is scheduled to finish this statue
and erect it on topmost part of Basadi Betta in a few years.
You can spend a while at Basadi Betta; rest and get pleasure from the cool breeze blowing via the many aisles of the mantapas. The far-away hills as well as the rocky landscape with small
puddles present a lovely view.
There is one more surprise when you open the rare door of the temple complex. You can see a beautiful lake called Maidala Kere down below. This wonderful lake was once serving the water requirements
of Tumkur.
Overnight stay at the Basadi Betta is usually an thrilling experience. You need to take the permission from the temple people. You need to carry water for drinking and foodstuff along with
you. The whole location is extremely neat as well as clean so please make sure that it remains like that at the time you depart.
Annual fair at Basadi Betta is held in January on the event of birthday of Chandranatha. This fair attracts huge number of devotees.

How to reach Basadi Betta: Drive towards Tumkur for about 65 km on National Highway 4 (NH4) and locate the entrance arch of Mandaragiri then proceed further to reach the base of
Basadi Betta. If you are going by bus get off at Dobbspet and catch a private bus to Panditanahalli and walk from there towards the hill.
