Mekedatu

Mekedatu is a wonderful weekend getaway spot along River Kaveri in Kanakapura Taluk located at a distance of 90 km from Bangalore. Sangama is the place where River Arkavati merges with River Kaveri. From this spot, Makedatu is about 4 kilometers downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep gorge so narrow that you certainly will believe that a goat can jump across it (The meaning of Mekedatu in kannada is goat's leap).

This is not actually so narrow and no goat usually found in that part of Karnataka can cross the distance in just one leap. The name of Mekedatu comes from an incident which is supposed to are witnessed by herdsmen in that region a very long time in the past. It is claimed a goat being chased by a tiger made a risky effort to rescue its life by leaping from one side of this gorge and was able to cross over the raging river underneath, but the tiger didn't try to replicate this feat, as well as abandoned the chase. The spot where the goat leapt has widened since then from erosion created by the river Kaveri.

There's moreover some legendary importance to this place (both Sangama and Mekedatu). According to one story, the goat (meke) that has been said to have leapt across the river Kaveri was Lord Shiva in disguise. On both rocky precipices of this gorge, you can find different holes, whose shapes resemble goats' hooves, though a number of times larger. It had been believed that only divine goats could have marked their footprints in these kinds of hard rocks.

At Mekedaatu, river Kaveri runs via a deep, narrow ravine of hard granite rock. The river, that is greater than 150 meters broad at the confluence (at Sangama) flows in the only just 10-meter-wide gorge at Mekedatu. It is claimed that a goat could leap on it, giving the falls the name Goat's Leap.

Gorge: River Kaveri flows very speedily through the gorge, gouging pits in the rocky riverbed. The climb down is steep and also the rocks slippery, which makes it extremely risky to swim in the river. Drowning still occur here, though people are warned regarding the danger.

How to get there?

From Banglore there are lots of tour operators who offer transport to Sangama. One can drive only up to Kaveri Akravati Sangama. After this you can actually cross the river in coracle (circular) boats or by walking if the water level is at a low level. From Akravati Sangama Mekedatu is only 4 km downstream. There is just one bus available at another end that can take you till Mekedatu. The rocks at Mekedatu get slippery during monsoon.

A private vehicle can be taken but the road is in very bad shape.

KSRTC buses and private buses are available to Kanakapura from KR Market, Bangalore. From Kanakapura you can find only few buses to Sangama.

Route: Bangalore - Kanakapura - Sathanur - Chunchi Falls - Sangama - Mekedatu.
