Ranga Shankara was opened in the year 2004; it had been envisioned by Ms. Arundathi Nag, in memory of her beloved husband, Shankar Nag, a well-known star in Kannada movie industry who passed away
in a road accident at Davanagere in the year 1990.
Ranga Shankara in JP Nagar aims in promoting theatre in all languages plus prides by itself in lending out the auditorium at a very low fare. It follows a minimum of "a play per day" rule,
6 days a week.
Shankar Nag's vision was to build a exciting, reasonably priced, inclusive space for theatre as well as theatre lovers of Bangalore city. Following Shankar Nag's death, Sanket Trust,
using the support of friends as well as theatre lovers from all around the India, engaged in building Ranga Shankara, a premier theatre in Bangalore city.
In the year 1994, the Government of Karnataka allotted a piece of land kept aside for public facilities, at JP Nagar, to the Sanket trust, for 30 years on lease. But because of insufficient
money, construction was started in the year 2001. The total cost of this project was estimated around Rs. 3 crores. Funds were raised by way of donations, starting from Rs 5 from average theatre
lovers to huge amount from business people. The Ranga Shankara in JP Nagar, was designed by architect Sharukh Mistry and Ranga Shankara was opened to the public on 28-Oct-2004.
Ranga Shankara has free seating, a tribute to its confidence in the design of this auditorium: wherever you sit in Ranga Shankara, your feel of the performance remains intimate as well as
immediate.
Ranga Shankara in JP Nagar is a space dedicated to theatre activities and it will not rent out the auditorium for anything besides theatre performances. All bookings should be for shows open
for the public. No bookings are done for private shows.
The prices of ticket at Ranga Shankara are affordable for all. Using the support of the key sponsor Vodafone, Ranga Shankara able in making affordable to theatre troupes in Bangalore city
and across the country.
Ranga Shankara extends a similar benefit to its viewers, keeping the tickets as well as all its facilities reasonably priced, with special facilities for the differently-abled.
Considering that Ranga Shankara must be accessible to everybody, the building as well as auditorium have special access conveniences (an elevator plus specially equipped rest rooms) along
with the capacity to accommodate wheelchairs inside auditorium.
