St. Mary's Basilica is a church located opposite the Russel Market Square in Shivajinagar, Bangalore. St. Mary's Basilica stands out as the oldest church in Bangalore and it is the only church in the Karnataka state which has been elevated for the reputation of the minor basilica. It is popular for the celebrations held during the St. Mary's Feast in the month of September every year, an occasion that draws a lot of people from in and around Bangalore city.

St. Mary's Basilica in Bangalore, was initially constructed as a small chapel by Abbe Dubois, in the year 1818. But, later on, Reverend L.E. Kleiner got it changed into an ornate Gothic style church in the year 1882.

Architecture of St. Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Basilica is constructed in Gothic-style with arches, decorative motifs as well as stained glass windows. Many columns and tall spires of this basilica could be viewed from quite a distance. St. Mary's Basilica was decorated with many stained glass windows, which was imported from Paris. But, for the period of World War II, these windows were detached and after that once more restored in the year 1947, the year of India's independence.

St. Mary's Feast at St. Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Feast which celebrates the birth of Mother Mary is an important event celebrated in basilica and is witnessed by a large number of devotees. The celebration in the month of September, the celebrations go on for ten days concluding in a grand chariot parade on the final day. The celebrations commence with the hoisting of a customary flag. A Novena is held for the first nine days starting from August 30 to September 7. On September 8, the final day on which Mother Mary was born, is celebrated like a feast. Holy mass is done in different languages as well as mass weddings are also done for the poor & needy.

A thanksgiving mass is also organized for partners who has finished 50 years of marriage. Eucharistic celebrations are held on the day of feast plus a adorned chariot with the image of Mother Mary is drawn by people along the many streets of Bangalore.
