Vidhana Soudha

Vidhana Soudha is top among one of the most outstanding and also the most magnificent structures in the Bangalore city of India. A sightseeing trip of Bangalore is imperfect without a visit to the Vidhana Soudha.

The Vidhana Soudha, located in heart of the Bangalore city, is a seat of the state legislature of Karnataka. The 300 rooms of Vidhana Soudha accommodate around twenty-two departments of state government of Karnataka.

Vidhana Soudha is definitely a magnificent structure, constructed in a style which can be described as Neo-Dravidian plus incorporates elements of Indo-Saracenic as well as Dravidian designs.

Though Kengal Hanumanthaiah is highly praised for the conception and building of the Vidhana Soudha, a building idea to accommodate the secretariat as well as legislature was actually intended and decided upon by cabinet of K C Reddy which was just referred to as House of Legislature. The foundation was laid on July 13, 1951 by Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. But it was Kengal Hanumanthaiah who was mastermind in the revamp as well as speedy construction of Vidhana Soudha. For this, Kengal Hanumanthaiah visited Russia, Europe, United States & many places and got the concept of building Vidhana Soudha by incorporating a variety of styles from the structures he had viewed.

Vidhana Soudha was completed in the year 1956. The chief engineer of Vidhan Soudha, B.R. Manickam mainly made use of granite to achieve the structure constructed. The Vidhana Soudha is constructed mainly with "Bangalore Granite", excavated in the areas around Mallasandra as well as Hessaraghatta. To impress visually, "Magadi pink" along with "Turuvekere black" stones has also been used. The total cost for this project was Rs 1.75 crore.

The Vidhana Soudha is the biggest Legislative building in India. The eastern entrance features a porch which has 12 granite columns, 40 feet tall. Leading to the entrance hall is a journey of stairs which has 45 steps, over 200 feet wide. The central dome of Vidhana Soudha is about sixty feet in diameter and is supported by eight pillars. It also has six minor domes, four in front plus two behind. The central dome is topped by an image of the Indian national emblem. The face of this structure is inscribed using the words 'Government's Work is God's Work'. Vidhana Soudha and its surroundings occupy 60 acres.

The Vidhana Soudha seems to be breathtakingly beautiful on Sunday evenings and on public holidays when it is illuminated.

Following the 2001 Indian Parliament attack in India, issues were raised regarding the safety measures of Vidhana Soudha. The fencing close to the footpath on all sides was changed to a solid 10-foot high steel fencing. Accordingly watch towers, upgraded scanning equipment, automatic doors as well as thorough screening systems were also installed.

Vidhana Soudha of Bangalore could be accessed from all of the four directions. But, the entry for the building has been restricted and one has to get prior permission prior to visiting its interiors. The High court of Karnataka or Attara Kacheri is found in opposite of the Vidhana Soudha.
